The short version
All three standards use 4 pairs of twisted copper wire with RJ45 connectors. They're physically interchangeable — a Cat6a patch cable will plug into a Cat5e switch port, and vice versa. The difference is performance: how fast, how far, and how much interference rejection.
| Standard | Speed & distance | Bandwidth |
|---|---|---|
| Cat5e | 1 Gbps · 100m | 100 MHz |
| Cat6 | 10 Gbps @ 55m | 250 MHz |
| Cat6a | 10 Gbps @ 100m | 500 MHz |
