Power Cord Types Chart

Every plug and connector we build cords on, in one chart — NEMA straight-blade and twist-lock, IEC 60320 appliance couplers and their locking variants, IEC 60309 pin & sleeve, the international plug types and GFCI cord ends. Each row shows the rating, the pinout, what it mates with, and links to every cord built on it.

How to read a power cord type

A power cord is named by its two ends. The plug (male) goes into the power source — a wall receptacle, a PDU outlet, a generator. The connector (female) goes into the equipment's inlet. A NEMA 5-15P to IEC 60320 C13 cord runs from a North American 15 A wall outlet to the C14 inlet on a server, monitor or PDU; a C14 to C13 cord jumps power from a PDU outlet to that same inlet; a NEMA 5-15P to NEMA 5-15R cord is an extension cord — the same family on both ends.

Three things fix which type you need:

  • The standard — NEMA in North America (WD 6), IEC 60320 for equipment inlets worldwide, IEC 60309 for industrial pin & sleeve, and the country plug types (Type C, E/F, G, I…) for export builds.
  • The rating — amperage and voltage are encoded in the connector geometry, so a 20 A plug will not enter a 15 A receptacle and a 250 V blade set will not enter a 125 V outlet. Pick the connector for the circuit, then the cordage gauge for the load: 14 AWG carries 15 A, 12 AWG carries 20 A, 10 AWG carries 30 A.
  • Retention — twist-lock NEMA (L-series) and the locking IEC variants (Z-Lock+, P-Lock, A-Lock, V-Lock, S-Lock, Dual-Lock) hold the cord in when a bumped or vibrating cord would otherwise cut power.

In modern home installations, 5-20R T-Slot receptacles are often used when 20A circuits are installed due to flexibility of being downward compatable with the 5-15P.

The IEC 320 C15 Power cable is used to power electrical devices that emit so much heat (intentionally or unintentionally) that they require a power connection that can withstand more than the 70 °C (158 °F) temperature rating of the standard C13. In combination with the C14 plug type, the use cases of this high-temperature cable are almost exclusively data center environments. This cable would most likely be found supplying a High-Powered Switch power from a rack-mounted PDU power supply source. If your equipment has a IEC320 C16 Inlet it should only be mated with the matching C15-Power Connector.

The IEC 60320 C5 is a grounded 3 Wire connector rated up to 250V and 2.5 Amps Internationally or 125V and 10 Amps in North America. The C5 mates with a C6 inlet, and is commonly used for laptop power supplies, projectors, and some televisions. Being slightly smaller in size than the C13, the C5 can be a good choice for smaller appliances. This connector is sometimes referred to as a "Mickey Mouse" connector due to the shape of the connector looking similar to the kids television show character.

The IEC 60320 C21 is a grounded 3 Wire connector rated up to 250V and 20 Amps. The C21 mates with a C22 or C20 inlet, and is commonly used in a jumper cable scenario in IT Installations providing power from a PDU to a server, router, switch or other computing device. The C21 is a HIGH TEMPERATURE version of the C19 connector, with a maximum pin temperature of 155°C instead of the standard 65°C ofa C19, and is typically used in high powered blade servers, large network routers, and other IT equipment that draws more power than a standard C13 can accommodate.

The IEC 60320 C7 is an ungrounded 2 Wire connector rated up to 250V and 2.5 Amps Internationally or 125V and 10 Amps in North America. The C7 mates with a C8 inlet, and is commonly used for laptop power supplies, video game consoles, televisions, and other double-insulated small appliances. This connector is sometimes referred to as a "Figure-8" or "Shotgun" connector due to it's shape. A variation of the C7 exists, sometimes referred to as a C7P or C7 Polarized, although it is not documented in the IEC 60320 standard. The C7P has one square side and one circular side so the connector only mates with the inlet using the correct pin configuration.

The IEC 60320 C14 is rated for 250VAC and 15 Amps. The P-Lite locking mechanism is an ergonomic advance of the standard P-Lock plug type, designed with high-density pdus in mind. It has a recessed plug head that allows space for fingers to easily install and un install the plugs. It can mate with various proprietary PDUs like Server Tech and Raritan.

The LEFT ANGLE refers to the cord orientation relative to the connector face, refer to the diagram. When looking at the back of the connector (as if plugged in) the cord will exit left. The IEC 60320 C15 (female) is a grounded 3 Wire connector rated up to 250V & 10 Amps Internationally and 125V/250V & 15 Amps in North America. The C15 mates with a C16 inlet as well as a C14 Inlet and is commonly used in a jumper cable scenario in IT Installations providing power from a PDU to a server, router, switch or other computing device. Power cord types — common questions

The questions we answer most often when someone is matching a cord to a socket and a device.

What is the difference between a plug and a connector?

The plug is the male end that goes into the power source (a wall receptacle or a PDU outlet); the connector is the female end that goes into the equipment's inlet. On a NEMA 5-15P to IEC 60320 C13 cord, the 5-15P is the plug and the C13 is the connector; the C13 mates with the C14 inlet on the device.

What do C13, C14, C19 and C20 mean?

They are IEC 60320 coupler designations. Odd numbers are connectors (female, on the cord), even numbers are the inlets they mate with: a C13 connector fits a C14 inlet, a C19 fits a C20. C13 / C14 is rated 10 A internationally and 15 A in North America; C19 / C20 is rated 16 A / 20 A. C15 and C21 are the high-temperature (120 °C) versions of C13 and C19.

How do I know which NEMA type I have?

Read the designation on the plug face or the receptacle: the number before the dash is the series (5 = 125 V grounded, 6 = 250 V grounded, 1 = 125 V ungrounded), the number after it is the amperage (15, 20, 30, 50), and P or R marks plug or receptacle. An L prefix means twist-lock. A 5-20R receptacle has a T-shaped neutral slot and accepts both 5-15P and 5-20P plugs; a 5-15R accepts only a 5-15P.

Can a 15 A cord be used on a 20 A circuit?

A cord with a 15 A plug can be plugged into a 20 A receptacle that accepts it (a 5-20R accepts a 5-15P), but the cord is still limited to what its plug, connector and cordage are rated for. Match the cord's rating to the equipment's draw, not to the circuit breaker: 14 AWG cordage for 15 A, 12 AWG for 20 A.

What is the difference between an extension cord and an adapter?

An extension cord has the same connector family on both ends — NEMA 5-15P to 5-15R, L6-20P to L6-20R — and simply extends the circuit. An adapter changes the configuration: 5-15P to C13, L6-30P to L6-20R, C14 to a universal receptacle. Both are in the chart; the family link on each row takes you to the cords built on that connector.

Which international plug type do I need?

Match the destination country's outlet: Type E/F (Schuko) across most of continental Europe, Type G (BS 1363) in the UK, Ireland, Singapore and Hong Kong, Type I (AS/NZS 3112) in Australia and New Zealand, Type N (NBR 14136) in Brazil, Type J (SEV 1011) in Switzerland, Type L (CEI 23-50) in Italy. The equipment end is usually an IEC 60320 C13 or C5, so only the plug changes.
