About 20A 250V NEMA L6-20P Twist-Lock Power Cords

C19 to L6-20P adapter cables, power your equipment.

The NEMA L6-20P to IEC320-C19 power cable is a commonly used power cable that can power various IT equipment from a 250 Volt 20 Amp twist lock power source found in North America. We stock this power cable in a variety of lengths in black and white color options. Since both the plug and connector are rated for 20 Amperes, we followed suite for the wire gauge and utilized 12awg, creating a power cable suitable for any condition the L6-20P or C19 can be used for.

NEMA L6-20P power cable options.

For this product line, we stock many connector pairings with wire gauges generally being designed to match the amperage rating of the connector. We have options in IEC320 C13, C19, C15, C21 along with NEMA connectors like L6-20R Extension and 6-15, 6-20R and L6-30R Adapters. One example is our C19 to L6-20P Power cord which utilizes 12awg cordage and is available in both black and white in several lengths.

Extending power from an L620R receptacle with a NEMA L6-20 extension cord.

If your equipment’s power supply cable cannot reach the power source allocated for it, you will need to utilize the NEMA L6-20p/r extension cord. This cable is rated for the same power specifications as the wall receptacle, so you will not lose any power by doing so, but you will want to be cautious of where you route your extension cord, ensuring that it will not be damaged or harmed by sharp and heavy objects.

The NEMA L6-20 Connector is rated for 250V and 20A. It is wired as HOT-HOT-GROUND, meaning this connector does not have a neutral conductor. L6-20 and L6-30 connectors are commonly found on in-rack power distribution units in applications where the main supply voltage is greater than 120 V. The locking capability and high power output also makes these connectors common in industrial settings for powering large equipment.

The IEC 60320 C19 is a grounded 3 Wire connector rated up to 250V and 20 Amps. The C19 mates with a C20 inlet, and is commonly used in a jumper cable scenario in IT Installations providing power from a PDU to a server, router, switch or other computing device. The C19 is typically used in high powered blade server chassis, large network routers, and other IT equipment that draws more power than a standard C13 can accommodate.

The C13 mates with a C14 inlet, and is commonly used in a jumper cable scenario in IT Installations providing power from a PDU to a server, router, switch or other computing device. Most people know the C13 as 'the thing that plugs into my computer' because it is the standard connector used to power most desktop computers. In a desktop computer application, the most common cable is the NEMA 5-15P to C13, which connects your standard North American wall outlet to a desktop computer.

The IEC 320 C15 Power cable is used to power electrical devices that emit so much heat (intentionally or unintentionally) that they require a power connection that can withstand more than the 70 °C (158 °F) temperature rating of the standard C13. In combination with the C14 plug type, the use cases of this high-temperature cable are almost exclusively data center environments. This cable would most likely be found supplying a High-Powered Switch power from a rack-mounted PDU power supply source. If your equipment has a IEC320 C16 Inlet it should only be mated with the matching C15-Power Connector.

About 20A 250V NEMA L6-20P Twist-Lock Power Cords

The NEMA L6-20 Power Cord product series features power cables rated for up to 250 Volts and 20 Amperes of power, supplying power to various equipment in North America. The 250V NEMA Twist Lock is generally found in Data Centers, Commercial Kitchens and Manufacturing Facilities. We offer many different power cable configurations and lengths to suit most applications.

General Information

The NEMA L6-20P Power Cord Series is rated up to 250VAC and 20A. The plug can be locked into place on the matching receptacle which prevents nuisance disconnection. This feature makes this plug popular in commercial and industrial settings where high traffic or moving of equipment is common. If you do not require this added locking safety feature, you should look into our NEMA 5-20P Power Cord Series unless your specifically connecting to a L5-20R. Refer with your team to decide which power cord best fits your needs.

The NEMA L6-20P to Open/Whip/Pig Tail- NACC, North American Color Code, refers to the color code of the conductor insulation which is BLACK / WHITE / GREEN. This cord is for field installation to equipment or device that requires a line, neutral and ground conductor (not exceeding the rated power of the cord) to operate. Standard Whips are Removed Outer Jacket(ROJ) 2" and then each conductor is stripped 1/4" to bare conductor. Other ROJ/Strip combinations are available for bulk quantities upon request.

Choosing the Right NEMA L6-20P Cord for Your Application

NEMA L6-20P twist-lock power cords are rated for 250V and 20A and are wired hot-hot-ground — there is no neutral conductor. That wiring makes them the standard choice wherever a 208V or 240V single-phase circuit feeds data center racks, commercial kitchen equipment, or industrial machinery.

Match the device-end connector to your equipment

  • IEC 60320 C19 — use for high-draw servers, blade chassis, and large network routers (20A rated).
  • IEC 60320 C13 — use for standard 1U servers and switches drawing up to 15A from a PDU.
  • IEC 60320 C15 / C21 — use when the equipment inlet is rated for elevated operating temperatures.
  • NEMA L6-20R — use to build a locking-to-locking extension or a PDU whip that stays locked at both ends.
  • Open / pigtail (ROJ) — use for hardwired field termination; conductors are color-coded Black / White / Green per NACC.

Wire gauge and load

Choose 12 AWG for circuits running at or near 20A. 14 AWG cords in this collection are rated to 15A and are appropriate for lighter loads such as C13-terminated PDU whips. When in doubt, the heavier gauge is always the safer choice for long runs or high-duty-cycle equipment.
