Extension Cords vs. Adapter Cords

This collection contains two distinct product types. Extension cords (L5-30P to L5-30R) carry the full 30-amp rating and simply add length between a generator, transfer switch, or power panel and your equipment. Adapter cords (L5-30P to C13, C19, 5-20R, or L5-20R) let you power equipment whose inlet does not match the L5-30R outlet — common in data centers and AV installations where a single 30A circuit feeds multiple lower-amperage devices.

Wire Gauge and Circuit Loading

Full 30-amp runs use 10 AWG SJT cordage. Adapter cords that step down to a 20-amp connector use 12 AWG, and the C13 adapter uses 14 AWG to match the connector's 15-amp rating. Never exceed the amperage rating of the lowest-rated component in the circuit.

What is the difference between NEMA L5-30P and NEMA 5-30P?
The NEMA L5-30P is the locking version: its blades are curved so the plug twists and locks into a matching L5-30R receptacle, preventing accidental disconnection. The NEMA 5-30P is the straight-blade, non-locking equivalent rated for the same 125V / 30A circuit. If your receptacle has curved slots arranged in a circle, you need the L5-30P. If it has straight parallel slots, you need the 5-30P.
What wire gauge do NEMA L5-30P cords use?
