Why locking power cords matter — the numbers

Accidental cord disconnection causes a disproportionate share of data center downtime. Uptime Institute data consistently shows power-related failures account for over half of all significant outages, and human error — including accidental cord pulls during maintenance — contributes to the majority of those incidents.

A standard IEC C13 plug requires roughly 10–20N of force to disconnect. The locking systems below require 120–200N — that's 10 to 20 times more resistant. Which system should you choose?

Match the locking system to your PDU brand, security needs, and cable-management workflow.

  • For most data centers: P-Lock

    The right answer for the majority of installations. Works with every PDU brand, every IEC C14/C20 inlet, and is the lowest-cost locking option. Available in 10+ colors for cable management. If you're starting a locking cord program without specific PDU constraints, start here.

  • For APC/Schneider Electric PDUs: A-Lock

    Designed specifically for APC Smart-UPS and Symmetra lines. Better integration with APC's proprietary outlets than universal systems. Available in C15/C16 variants for hot-aisle environments above 35°C.

  • For AI compute racks and mission-critical clusters: D-Lock

    The only commercially available IEC 60320 cord that locks at both ends simultaneously. P-Lock plug on the PDU side, S-Lock connector on the equipment side. Both engage automatically on insertion. Recommended for any rack where a cord pull could take down multiple GPU servers.

  • For color-coded cable management: P-Lite

    Identical locking mechanism to P-Lock but in 10+ standard colors. Industry standard for visual cable management in high-density PDU environments where rapid identification during maintenance is critical.

  • For Zonit microLock PDUs: Z-Lock

    Required if you're using Zonit's microLock ecosystem. Highest pull-out force (200N+) of any standard IEC 60320 locking system. Not backward compatible with non-Zonit inlets.
