Locking Power Cords Reference

Six locking systems compared: how each mechanism works, pull-out force ratings, PDU compatibility, and guidance on which to choose for your infrastructure.

Why locking cords matter

Accidental cord disconnection is one of the most common causes of data center downtime — and one of the easiest to prevent. Locking connectors require a deliberate action to disconnect, eliminating the risk from cord pulls during maintenance, cable management work, or equipment relocation.

A standard IEC C13 connector has a pull-out force of approximately 10–20N. The locking systems below range from 120N to 200N+ — 10 to 20 times more resistant to accidental disconnection.

Locking systems compared

Pull-out force ratings, available connectors and plugs, compatible PDUs, and selection notes for each of the six IEC 60320 locking systems.

SystemPull forceConnectorsPlugsMechanismCompatible PDUsNotes
P-Lock120N+C13, C15, C19C14, C20Spring-loaded tabs on the connector body. Pinch both tabs simultaneously to release. Backward compatible — P-Lock connectors fit standard inlets.Server Technology, Raritan, Vertiv, Emerson, Tripp LiteThe most widely deployed locking system. Black and blue color options standard; custom colors available for cable management.
Z-Lock (Zonit)200N+C13, C15, C19C14, C20Quarter-turn rotary locking mechanism. Insert and turn clockwise to lock; turn counter-clockwise to release. Zonit microLock PDU technology.Zonit microLock PDUs and modules (requires Zonit-compatible outlets)Higher pull-out force than P-Lock. Requires Zonit-compatible PDU outlets — not backward compatible with standard C14/C20 inlets.
A-Lock (Auto-Lock)120N+C13, C15, C19C14, C20Red release tab integrated into the connector. Locks automatically on insertion; press red tab to release. Temperature-rated options to 120°C for C15/C16 applications.APC by Schneider Electric (Symmetra, Smart-UPS lines)APC proprietary system. Tool-required disconnect on some models. Best for APC-heavy data center environments. Available in C15 (120°C) for hot-aisle applications.
V-Lock200N+C13, C15, C19C14, C20Lever-operated locking mechanism on the connector body. Yellow color for visual identification. Press lever to release. Higher withdrawal force than tab-based systems.Raritan, Server Technology, and compatible with standard inletsYellow color coding makes cable pulls immediately visible during maintenance. Popular for high-uptime environments where accidental disconnection is catastrophic.
S-Lock (IEC-Lock)150N+C13, C19C14, C20Internal red ring mechanism that pinches the connector pins against the inlet contacts. Pull the red ring to release. Internal locking — no visible external tabs.Universal (fits any standard C14/C20 inlet)Cleaner appearance than tab-based systems. Backward compatible with all standard inlets. The red ring provides clear visual indication of the locked state.
D-Lock (Dual-Lock)150N+ (dual retention)C13, C19 (S-Lock connector)C14, C20 (P-Lock plug)Combines P-Lock plug on one end with S-Lock connector on the other. Both ends lock independently — the highest-security locking configuration available for IEC 60320.P-Lock plug end compatible with Server Technology, Raritan, VertivFor applications where both ends of the cord must be positively retained. Both ends lock on insertion. Recommended for mission-critical AI compute infrastructure.

Which system to choose

SituationRecommendedReason
Mixed PDU environmentP-LockBroadest compatibility. Works with any standard C14/C20 inlet and most PDU brands.
APC/Schneider Electric PDUsA-LockDesigned for APC inlets. Best integration with Schneider Electric infrastructure.
Hot aisle above 35°CA-Lock C15 or P-Lock C15C15/C16 variants available — 120°C rated for high-temperature environments.
Highest security (AI compute)D-LockBoth ends lock. 150N+ force on both the plug and connector. Maximum protection.
Zonit microLock PDUsZ-LockRequired for Zonit microLock ecosystem. Not compatible with standard inlets.
Visual cable managementV-Lock (yellow)Yellow color immediately identifies locked cords during maintenance.
Retrofitting existing cordsSecure SleevesRetrofit locking without replacing entire cord. Clamp-on mechanical retention.
