About NEMA Twist Lock Power Cords

NEMA twist lock versatile and secure use.

The NEMA Twist Lock is found in nearly all industries and is used for more of the critical circumstances where a power disconnection is not an acceptable nuisance. Each type of twist lock will have a predominant role in each industry, for example the NEMA L5-15p is more prevalent in commercial shops but the NEMA L6-30P will only be found in industrial environments powering large equipment. These cables are incredible versatile, as they are a standard plug-connector and can be securely installed by an untrained employee easily while still maintaining a strong and secure connection.

Choosing the Right NEMA Twist-Lock Cord for Your Application

With 252 configurations in this collection, narrowing your selection comes down to four parameters:

  • Voltage: 125V circuits use L5-series plugs; 250V circuits use L6-series plugs.
  • Amperage: Match the cord's amperage rating to your circuit breaker — 15A (L_-15), 20A (L_-20), or 30A (L_-30). Never exceed the circuit rating.
  • Connector type: The load end may terminate in another locking connector (e.g., L5-20R, L6-30R) or an IEC 60320 connector (C13, C15, C19, C21) for direct connection to servers, PDUs, and rack equipment.
  • Wire gauge: 14 AWG SJT for 15A circuits, 12 AWG SJT for 20A, and 10 AWG SJT for 30A — all available in this collection.

Use the filters on the left to narrow by plug type, connector type, current rating, wire gauge, voltage, length, and certifications (UL, cUL, RoHS, REACH). Not sure which configuration fits your rack or PDU? The Power Cord Selection Calculator and Locking Power Cord Comparison guide can help you decide quickly.

Frequently asked questions

What is a NEMA Twist Lock Power Cord?
A NEMA Twist Lock Cable is a Power cord designed to mate with a Twist Lock Receptacle in North America, that has been designed to the standards produced by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association. These Twist Lock plugs and receptacles will have metal “flanged” pins that will functionally lock into place. To activate the locking mechanism of these power connectors, you must twist the flanges into place, which is why they have come to be called the “Twist Lock”.
What is the Difference between a NEMA 5-15P and a NEMA L5-15P Plug?
Locking Functionality. These plugs are rated for the same voltage and amperage and are both found in North America. They are both designed by NEMA for similar purposes. The only difference which is visibly obvious is the orientation/design of the electrical pins. The L5-15P can be “twist-locked” into place, which is commonly used for high traffic areas or when powering equipment that would have adverse effects if dis-connected from a power source unexpectedly.
What do the numbers mean for the designation of NEMA Plugs?
Voltage and Amperage Classification. Under the NEMA classification, the first number (extends into double digits) will designate the voltage and conductor count. The second number (commonly distinguished from the first with a “-”) is the amperage rating. For example the NEMA 1-15P is rated for 125 Volts, without a ground under “NEMA 1” and is rated for up to 15 Amperes of power. To learn more about these classifications, refer to our comprehensive guide on NEMA Locking Configurations.
What is a twist-lock extension cord and how does it differ from a standard cord?
A twist-lock extension cord uses a NEMA locking plug and connector that rotate roughly 30° after insertion to mechanically lock into the receptacle, preventing accidental disconnection. A standard straight-blade cord relies only on friction. Twist-lock cords are preferred in data centers, industrial facilities, and anywhere vibration, cable weight, or high-availability requirements make an unintentional disconnect unacceptable.
What are twist-lock cord ends, and can I order them separately?
Twist-lock cord ends (also called cord-cap connectors or receptacle ends) are the female locking connectors fitted to the load end of a twist-lock cord set — for example, an L5-20R or L6-30R body. World Cord Sets offers cord sets with a wide range of locking plug and connector combinations. For a custom length or connector pairing not shown in the collection, use the Power Cord Configurator or request an instant quote.
What is the difference between a twist-lock plug and a standard NEMA plug?
A twist-lock plug (designated with an 'L' prefix, e.g., NEMA L5-20P) has curved blades that rotate into a locked position inside a matching receptacle. A standard NEMA plug (e.g., NEMA 5-20P) has straight blades held only by contact friction. Twist-lock designs are required by many data center and industrial standards where a secure, vibration-resistant connection is critical.
What does the NEMA twist-lock designation tell me about a cord?
The NEMA locking designation encodes three key facts:L — locking (twist-lock) designFirst digit(s) — configuration group (e.g., L5 = 2-pole 3-wire 125V; L6 = 2-pole 3-wire 250V)Last two digits — amperage rating (e.g., 15 = 15A, 20 = 20A, 30 = 30A)So an NEMA L6-20P is a locking, 250V, 20A plug. Matching the plug family and amperage to your receptacle and circuit rating is essential for safe operation.
