About NEMA 6-20P Power Cords

Accessing 6 20r receptacle with the NEMA 6 20p to c13 power cable.

Access 250 Volts of power from your wall outlet and power your equipment. The IEC320 C13 is the most commonly used connector around the globe, and with the 250 Volts of power you can be assure that your device will efficiently be powered and not require as much amperage as a 125 Volt source.

Features of the NEMA 6-20P power cables

These plugs are meticulously engineered to withstand the rigors of everyday use, thanks to their robust construction which ensures longevity and dependability. Our cables are approved by all local approval agencies like UL and NEMA for this product line, displaying our commitment to quality with the marks our products bear. Material Matters: Some manufacturers will cut costs by using inferior materials and composition in their products which will dissipate more heat and deteriorate faster. All of our cables are made with REACH and ROHS Compliances and never compromise quality. The NEMA 6-20P comes with a dedicated ground pin and conductor providing a safe path for the electricity to travel in the event of an electrical short.

The IEC 60320 C13 is a grounded 3 Wire connector rated up to 250V and 15 Amps. The C13 mates with a C14 inlet, and is commonly used in a jumper cable scenario in IT Installations providing power from a PDU to a server, router, switch or other computing device. Most people know the C13 as 'the thing that plugs into my computer' because it is the standard connector used to power most desktop computers. In a desktop computer application, the most common cable is the NEMA 5-15P to C13, which connects your standard North American wall outlet to a desktop computer.

About NEMA 6-20P Power Cords | 20A 250V Power Cables

The NEMA 6 20 power cords are designed to power the top end of standard equipment in industrial and house settings, and is the highest power supply cables for our non-locking NEMA Series. These cables access power from 250 Volt 20 Ampere rated outlets, which is a significant amount of power for a non-locking connection. Ensure your cable is not in a high traffic area and will not be accidentally unplugged under-load as this can create an electrical arc which is a fire hazard. Consider our Twist Locking NEMA Cables for your application in areas of high foot traffic.

General Information

The NEMA 6-20P Power Cords are rated up to 250VAC and 20A. This power cord set is designed for applications that require extra power than the standard 5-20P Power cords and are compatible with a Hot-Hot-Ground(2 Pole) wiring connection. These cord sets are typically used for connecting a 6-20R wall receptacle or connector, to a particular device. The device you intend to power will have a certain power inlet style that will likely match with one of our connector options in the 6-20P Power Cord Series. Refer with your team to make sure your power demands are satisfied under the voltage and ampere ratings of the cord you choose.

The NEMA 6-20P to Open/Whip/Pig Tail- NACC is a power supply cord rated for 250VAC and 20A max with 12AWG. NACC, North American Color Code, refers to the color code of the conductor insulation which is BLACK / WHITE / GREEN. This cord is for field installation to equipment or device that requires a line, line and ground conductor (not exceeding the rated power of the cord) to operate. Standard Whips are Remove Outer Jacket(ROJ) 2" and then each conductor is stripped 1/4" to bare conductor. Other ROJ/Strip combinations are available for bulk quantities upon request. For two pole cords like this, "X" pole is generally black and "Y" pole is white, with green as the ground conductor.

NEMA 6-20P to C13 and C19 — Choosing the Right Connector for Your Application

The NEMA 6-20P plug draws from a 250V 20A wall receptacle — the highest-rated non-locking NEMA outlet in North American commercial and industrial settings. Selecting the correct female connector on the device end is the most important decision when specifying one of these cord sets.

  • NEMA 6-20P to IEC 60320 C13 (15A): The most common configuration. Used to power servers, switches, and routers from a PDU or 6-20R wall outlet. Available in 14 AWG SJT; rated 15A/250V. Suitable when the device inlet is a C14.
  • NEMA 6-20P to IEC 60320 C19 (20A): Specified for high-draw equipment — blade server chassis, large UPS units, and high-density PDU drops — where a C13 would be undersized. Available in 12 AWG SJT; rated 20A/250V.
  • NEMA 6-20P to IEC 60320 C15 (15A): Identical footprint to C13 but rated for higher operating temperatures. Used with equipment that runs hot, such as certain switches and power supplies.
  • NEMA 6-20P to NEMA 6-20R (extension): Extends a 6-20 circuit to equipment that cannot be repositioned. Available in 12 AWG SJT up to 25 feet.

If your application is in a high-traffic area where accidental disconnection is a risk, consider a locking cord set instead. Use the Power Cord Configurator to match plug, connector, length, and gauge in one step.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a NEMA 6-20P and a NEMA 5-20P cord?
Both plugs are rated for 20 amps, but they supply different voltages and are not interchangeable.NEMA 5-20P: 125V, single hot conductor — the standard North American outlet used for most office and household equipment.NEMA 6-20P: 250V, two hot conductors and a ground — used where equipment requires higher voltage, such as industrial tools, certain server PDUs, and HVAC equipment. The blade orientation is different, so a 6-20P plug will not fit a 5-20R receptacle.
Can I use a NEMA 6-20P cord as an extension cord?
Yes. A NEMA 6-20P to NEMA 6-20R cord set functions as a 250V 20A extension cord, adding length between a 6-20R wall outlet and a device with a 6-20P plug. World Cord Sets stocks this configuration in 12 AWG SJT in lengths up to 25 feet. Never use a cord rated below the amperage of the connected equipment.
What wire gauge do NEMA 6-20P cords use, and does it matter?
Wire gauge determines how much current the cord can safely carry:14 AWG SJT: Rated for 15A loads. Used on NEMA 6-20P to C13 and C15 cords where the connector — not the plug — is the limiting factor.12 AWG SJT: Rated for 20A loads. Used on NEMA 6-20P to C19 and 6-20R cords where the full 20A circuit capacity is needed.Choosing a 14 AWG cord on a 20A circuit is safe only when the connected device draws no more than 15A. When in doubt, select 12 AWG.
What certifications do NEMA 6-20P cords from World Cord Sets carry?
Cords in this collection carry UL and cUL listings (United States and Canada). Many configurations also carry RoHS and REACH compliance markings. Every cord is hi-pot tested before shipment. Specific approval marks for each part number are listed on the individual product page; documentation is available from the sales team.
