Polarized vs. Non-polarized power cords
By design, there are some plugs and connectors that are symmetrical and can be inserted into a matching connector one way; then flipped over and inserted a second way. In some cases, this is not a problem, and the engineers will prefer user convenience over low-cost manufacturing. This is done by creating an internal circuitry that will allow the Line/Neutral to be plugged in either orientation as discussed above. When this is done, the manufacturer will use a “non-polarized” plug and connector since they have prepared the device for power in either configuration. Sometimes when a manufacturer does not want to go through this extra step, be it a cost savings or limited space reasoning, they will forgo the extra circuitry. When this is done, the plug and connector must be “polarized” so that the equipment will receive power in one way. When a plug is polarized you will be able to tell one pin is not identical to the other, usually with an added flanged tip. When a connector is polarized, it will not look symmetrical and will have a different shape on one side.
Is the C7 power cord grounded?
This power cord plugs into a grounded receptacle, however since the connector does not utilize a grounding connection, the ground is dropped in the plug housing. This means that the equipment being plugged in, and the IEC C7 Connector are not grounded.
Why do these cables use the SPT-2 “lamp cable”?
These power cables are unique to our product offering because they utilize a specific type of cable that is known as “lamp cable”. This cable uses 2 wires which is why it is rarely ever used, as the majority of power cables use 3 conductors (Ground, Hot, Neutral).

The IEC 60320 C7 is an ungrounded 2 Wire connector rated up to 250V and 2.5 Amps Internationally or 125V and 10 Amps in North America. The C7 mates with a C8 inlet, and is commonly used for laptop power supplies, video game consoles, televisions, and other double-insulated small appliances. This connector is sometimes referred to as a "Figure-8" or "Shotgun" connector due to it's shape. A variation of the C7 exists, sometimes referred to as a C7P or C7 Polarized, although it is not documented in the IEC 60320 standard. The C7P has one square side and one circular side so the connector only mates with the inlet using the correct pin configuration.

The IEC 60320 C14 is a grounded 3 Wire Plug rated up to 250V and 15 Amps. The C14 mates with a C13 outlet, typically found on Data Center/IT specific PDUs (Power Distribution Unit). The most common configuration for a C14 is in a jumper cable scenario, providing power from a PDU to IT Equipment.

About IEC 60320 C14 C7 Power Cords
The “shotgun” connector, also known as the IEC 60320 C7 gets its name from the two symmetrical barrels that form this connector and look like the barrel of a shotgun. This connector is only rated for 2.5 Amperes of power and does not use a ground, so generally, it is used in similar circumstances to the C5, but where the equipment does not require a ground. For example, power transformers for monitors and small gaming consoles. We stock both polarized and non-polarized power cables, and the type of inlet your are plugging into will determine your requirement. If your IEC 60320 C8 Inlet is symmetrical and looks like the shape of the number 8, it is “non-polarized” meaning it can be plugged in 2 different ways by rotating 180 degrees. If the Inlet is not symmetrical, it will require a “polarized” C7 connector. We denote this in our product skus with the “P” identified (ie. 1407P-_____).
