An extension cord carries the same connector family on both ends — a NEMA 5-15P plug to a NEMA 5-15R receptacle, an L6-20P to an L6-20R, a Schuko plug to a Schuko connector — so it extends a circuit without changing it. Every cord here is rated for the full amperage and voltage of its plug: 15 A on 14 AWG, 20 A on 12 AWG, 30 A twist-lock on 10 AWG. Straight-blade cords for offices and shops, L-series twist-lock cords for equipment that must not unplug, GFCI cords for wet or outdoor work, and the international families for export builds.

The NEMA 5-15P is a 3 Wire grounded plug featuring two blades (can be equal or unequal widths due to the ground pin forcing polarity) and one ground pin rated up to 125V AC and 15 Amps. The NEMA 5-15P is your standard household plug used for to connect small appliances such as TV's, Microwaves, hairdryers, etc to a wall outlet. The NEMA 5-15P is compatible with a Nema 5-20R T-Slot outlet, which is commonly found in new home installations.

The NEMA 5-20P is a 3 Wire grounded plug featuring two blades and one ground pin rated up to 125V AC and 20 Amps. The NEMA 5-20P is used in applications that require higher power draw such as large refrigerators, space heaters,large kitchen mixers, etc. The 5-20R T-SLot receptacle allows you to plug in either a 5-20P or a 5-15P plug, allowing greater flexibility. In modern home installations, 5-20R T-Slot receptacles are often used when 20A circuits are installed due to flexibility of being downward compatable with the 5-15P.

The NEMA L6-20 Connector is rated for 250V and 20A. It is wired as HOT-HOT-GROUND, meaning this connector does not have a neutral conductor. L6-20 and L6-30 connectors are commonly found on in-rack power distribution units in applications where the main supply voltage is greater than 120 V. The locking capability and high power output also makes these connectors common in industrial settings for powering large equipment.

About Extension Cords
Choosing an extension cord
Match the plug to the receptacle you have and the connector to the equipment you are powering — the designation is the same at both ends (a 5-20R accepts both 5-15P and 5-20P plugs, but a 5-20P plug needs a 5-20R receptacle). Pick the gauge for the load and the run: 14 AWG carries 15 A, 12 AWG carries 20 A, and longer runs at higher current want the heavier gauge to keep voltage drop down. Twist-lock (NEMA L5 / L6) cords lock into their receptacle so a bumped cord cannot cut power to a rack, a pump or a machine.
Extension cord or adapter?
If the two ends are different designations — 5-15P to 5-20R, L6-30P to L6-20R — the cord adapts one configuration to another and belongs with our plug adapters. Everything in this collection extends a circuit as-is.
