Plug Adapters for Data Center PDU Convenience

It can be challenging to spec in identical plug types for all of your equipment in a Data Cabinet. Since each equipment will have unique power requirements, they are not built identical. If your rackmount PDU does not have a unique plug type, you can easily adapt one of the outlets to a specific outlet type with plug adapters. They are a low cost solution to get your cabinet up and running.

    The IEC 60320 C14 is a grounded 3 Wire Plug rated up to 250V and 15 Amps. The C14 mates with a C13 outlet, typically found on Data Center/IT specific PDUs (Power Distribution Unit). The most common configuration for a C14 is in a jumper cable scenario, providing power from a PDU to IT Equipment.

    The IEC 60320 C20 is a grounded 3 Wire Plug rated up to 250V and 20 Amps. The C20 mates with a C19 outlet, typically found on Data Center/IT specific PDUs (Power Distribution Unit). The most common configuration for a C20 is in a jumper cable scenario, providing power from a PDU to a blade server chassis, high powered server, large network router, or similar device.

    The NEMA 5-15P is a 3 Wire grounded plug featuring two blades (can be equal or unequal widths due to the ground pin forcing polarity) and one ground pin rated up to 125V AC and 15 Amps. The NEMA 5-15P is your standard household plug used for to connect small appliances such as TV's, Microwaves, hairdryers, etc to a wall outlet. The NEMA 5-15P is compatible with a Nema 5-20R T-Slot outlet, which is commonly found in new home installations.

    The IEC 60320 C13 is a grounded 3 Wire connector rated up to 250V and 15 Amps. The C13 mates with a C14 inlet, and is commonly used in a jumper cable scenario in IT Installations providing power from a PDU to a server, router, switch or other computing device. Most people know the C13 as 'the thing that plugs into my computer' because it is the standard connector used to power most desktop computers. In a desktop computer application, the most common cable is the NEMA 5-15P to C13, which connects your standard North American wall outlet to a desktop computer.

Choosing the Right Plug Adapter: IEC, NEMA, and International Types

Plug adapters let you mate a male plug to a different female receptacle without rewiring — a common need in data centers, lab environments, and international deployments. Understanding the connector families helps you order the right part the first time.

IEC 60320 Adapters (C14, C20)

The C14 → C13 adapter is the most common data-center choice: it converts a PDU outlet to feed equipment with a C13 inlet. The C20 → C13 and C20 → C19 variants serve higher-current (20 A) PDU ports. Down-angle and splitter versions are also available for tight rack spaces or one-to-two outlet splits.

NEMA Adapters (5-15P, 5-20P, 6-20P)

NEMA adapters bridge mismatched receptacle types in commercial and industrial panels. Common examples include 5-15P → 5-20R (adding a 20 A receptacle from a 15 A plug) and 6-20P → L6-20R locking conversions for secure connections.

International and Universal Adapters

For international use, adapters are available for European Schuko CEE7/7, UK BS1363, and two-pin Euro CEE7/16 plugs. Universal adapter blocks accept a wide range of plug types — including NEMA 1-15P, 5-15P, 5-20P, 6-15P, 6-20P, IRAM2073, and AS3112 — making them practical for multi-region deployments.

Frequently asked questions

What plug types will the universal socket accept?
Many. NEMA : 1-15p, 5-15p, 5-20p, 6-15p, 6-20p. Universal: IRAM207, AS3112 10 & 15 Amp, GB2009 10 Amp, AFSNIT, CEE7/16, CEE7/4, CEE7/7, SI32, CEI 23-50 10Amp, JIS8303, KSC8305, GOST7396, SABS164-1 6 amp, CNS6797, BS1363 and IEC320 C14.
Will a Plug adapter adapt the voltage?
No. Power Plug adapters do not convert voltage, they only change the configuration allowing you to access the power source. If your power supply is not the same voltage type as what your equipment requires you will need a voltage converter as well.
How to ensure the universal connector will work.?
Check your Voltages. Every electrical device will have a listed operating voltage and frequency. Compare these to the supply voltage of the plug type (we list these in the Components tab) and the operating frequency of the country. If you're using a plug rated for 250 Volts, and your equipment is rated for 125 Volts, you will need a voltage adapter to access the power from the electrical outlet and should not plug in the adapter to the power supply.
What is the difference between an IEC C14 and C20 plug adapter?
Both are IEC 60320 data-center plug types, but they differ in current rating. The C14 is rated up to 15 A / 250 V and mates with a C13 receptacle — the standard for most rack PDU outlets. The C20 is rated up to 20 A / 250 V and mates with a C19 receptacle, used on higher-current PDU ports. Choose C20 adapters when your PDU outlet is a C19 or C20 and your equipment inlet is a lower-rated connector such as C13 or C15.
Will a plug adapter change the voltage or amperage of my circuit?
No. A plug adapter only changes the physical connector shape so two incompatible ends can mate. It does not step voltage up or down, and it does not increase the amperage capacity of the circuit. Always verify that the adapter's current rating meets or exceeds your load, and never exceed the rating of the weakest component in the circuit. If you need voltage conversion, a separate transformer or power supply is required.
What plug types does a universal adapter block accept?

Can I use a NEMA 6-20P plug adapter in a standard 5-15R wall outlet?
No. The NEMA 6-20P is a 250 V, 20 A plug; a standard NEMA 5-15R receptacle is rated for 125 V, 15 A and has a different blade configuration — the 6-20P will not physically fit. You need a receptacle rated for 250 V and at least 20 A, such as a NEMA 6-20R or L6-20R. If your panel only has 125 V circuits, a plug adapter cannot substitute for the correct circuit voltage.
