250 Volt Power source will not work with 110-220 Volt Equipment

The tricky part of using universal adapters is ensuring that your equipment will work with the power source. Since the NEMA 6-20P is connecting to a 250 Volt source, you must ensure you equipment is rated for this voltage. If your equipment says it accepts 120V or 110-220V it will not work with this plug type.

The Australia AS/NZS 3112 3 Pin is the standard 3 Pin plug for Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and many other pacific island countries. This is a grounded plug with many different variations depending on the amperage rating. Due AS/NZS regulations, the "line" and "neutral" pins now must be insulated. The best way to determine what Australia AS/NZS 3112 3 Pin you need is by the ground pin which changes with the amperage rating. The 10A plug has similar thickness ground pin compared with line/load. The 15A plug has a slightly wider ground pin. The 20A plug has a thicker ground/line and load pin. The 25A plug has an inverted "L" shaped ground. The 32A plug has a sideways "U" shaped ground. The plugs are capable of upwards compadibility but not vice versa. (i.e. the 10A plug will fit in any connector).

The Europe CEE7/16 2Pin is a 2 pole, ungrounded plug that is rated for 250V and 2.5A. Also known as the Europlug, this is physically not compatible with similar looking receptacles installed in the UK and Ireland, due to protection against over current and conflicting legislative safety standards.

About NEMA 6-20P 20A 250V Plug Adapters

NEMA 6-20P Adapter blocks are used for adapting a 250 Volt 20 Amp wall outlet to another power configuration type. It will still be 250 Volts of power and will not adapt the voltage. We offer this adapter block with Locking NEMA and Universal connector types, which can be used in many applications.

Choosing the Right NEMA 6-20P Adapter: Voltage, Wiring & Compatibility

Voltage Is Not Changed — Only the Connector Shape

The most important thing to understand about any NEMA 6-20P adapter is that it does not step down or convert voltage. Your outlet will still supply 250 volts after the adapter is installed. Before using one, confirm your equipment's nameplate accepts 250V input — devices labeled 120V only or 110–220V will not work and may be damaged.

6-20P Wiring: Hot–Hot–Ground (No Neutral)

The NEMA 6-20 family uses a two-hot, one-ground configuration with no neutral conductor. This is standard for 250V branch circuits in North America and is the same wiring scheme used by NEMA L6-20 locking connectors found on rack PDUs and industrial equipment.

Common Use Cases

  • Data center PDU feeds: Adapting a straight-blade 6-20P device to an L6-20R locking PDU receptacle.
  • Lab and industrial equipment: Connecting 250V instruments to locking panel receptacles without rewiring.
  • OEM and rack integration: Bridging plug types during equipment staging or testing.

Check Before You Order

  • Confirm the outlet or PDU receptacle is a NEMA 6-20R or L6-20R — not a 5-20R (120V).
  • Verify your equipment is rated for 20A at 250V.
  • If you need a different amperage or voltage, use the Power Cord Selection Calculator to find the right configuration.

Frequently asked questions

Will a NEMA 6-20P adapter convert 250V power to 110V or 120V?
No. A NEMA 6-20P plug adapter changes the physical connector shape only — it does not convert or step down voltage. The outlet remains a 250V source. Equipment rated for 120V or 110–220V will not operate safely on a 250V circuit. Only use this adapter with equipment whose nameplate confirms it accepts 250V input.
What does the NEMA 6-20P to L6-20R adapter actually do?
This adapter block lets a device with a NEMA 6-20P straight-blade plug connect to a NEMA L6-20R locking receptacle — the twist-lock connector common on rack PDUs and industrial equipment. It is wired Hot–Hot–Ground at 20A 250V with no neutral conductor, matching the L6-20 wiring standard.
What certifications do the 6-20P adapter blocks carry?
The adapters in this collection are UL and cUL listed and comply with RoHS and REACH requirements. Every unit is hi-pot tested before shipment. Certification documentation is available from the sales team on request.
Can I order a single NEMA 6-20P adapter, or is there a minimum quantity?
There is no minimum order quantity. You can purchase a single adapter or order in bulk — volume pricing tiers are shown on the product page. NET 30/60/90 terms are available for approved business accounts.
