About International Plug Type J Power Cords

Identifying the two Swiss Type J plug ratings.

There are two ratings of the SEV 1011 Type J plug used in Switzerland. The 10 Amp version has three round pins 19 mm long and 4 mm wide that span 19 mm, and it fits both 10 A and 16 A outlets. The 16 Amp version looks similar at first glance, but its pins are square in section, 21 mm long and 5 mm wide, and span 30.5 mm — so a 16 A plug cannot be inserted into a 10 A outlet. Dual-rated outlets and connectors with shaped openings accept both.

Plug types found in Switzerland.

Swiss outlets accept two plug families: the ungrounded Type C Europlug (CEE 7/16, 2.5 A) for small double-insulated electronics such as chargers, televisions and electric razors, and the grounded Type J (SEV 1011) for equipment that needs a protective earth — computers, monitors, lighting, kitchen appliances and general-purpose electrical equipment. Type J, which this product line is built around, is also the standard in Liechtenstein and is used alongside Type C in Rwanda. German Schuko (Type F) and Italian Type L plugs do not fit Swiss sockets.

The IEC 60320 C13 is a grounded 3 Wire connector rated up to 250V and 15 Amps. The C13 mates with a C14 inlet, and is commonly used in a jumper cable scenario in IT Installations providing power from a PDU to a server, router, switch or other computing device. Most people know the C13 as 'the thing that plugs into my computer' because it is the standard connector used to power most desktop computers. In a desktop computer application, the most common cable is the NEMA 5-15P to C13, which connects your standard North American wall outlet to a desktop computer.

The C7 mates with a C8 inlet, and is commonly used for laptop power supplies, video game consoles, televisions, and other double-insulated small appliances. This connector is sometimes referred to as a "Figure-8" or "Shotgun" connector due to it's shape. A variation of the C7 exists, sometimes referred to as a C7P or C7 Polarized, although it is not documented in the IEC 60320 standard. The C7P has one square side and one circular side so the connector only mates with the inlet using the correct pin configuration.

About International Plug Type J Power Cords | Swiss Power Cables

The Type J Swiss power plug type has 3 pins, one of which is a dedicate ground conductor that is orientated just above the other 2 load pins. It is rated for 250VAC and 10 or 16 Amps globally. It is rated for both 10 Amps and 16 Amps, but the 16 Amp plug has pins shaped more like a square which cannot be connected to the 10 Amp receptacle to prevent electrical fire hazard.

Buying Guide: Type J Swiss Power Cords for B2B and Data-Center Use

When Do You Need a Type J Cord?

If your equipment ships to or operates in Switzerland, it must terminate in an SEV 1011 Type J plug. The standard is mandatory for grounded (3-pin) connections and is not interchangeable with the superficially similar Type L (Italy) or Type I (Australia) plugs despite a similar triangular pin layout.

Choosing the Right Amperage

Match the cord's plug rating to the outlet rating at the installation site:

  • 10 A (SEV 1011 3-Pin 10A): suitable for servers, workstations, monitors, and general IT equipment drawing up to 10 A at 250 V.
  • 16 A (SEV 1011 3-Pin 16A): required for high-draw equipment such as blade server chassis or large UPS units. The square, wider-spaced pins prevent accidental insertion into a 10 A outlet.

Connector Selection for IT and Data-Center Applications

Pair the Type J plug with the IEC 60320 connector that matches your equipment's inlet: C13 for standard 1U/2U servers and PDU jumpers, C19 for high-density blade chassis, C15 where elevated operating temperatures are a concern, and C5 or C7 for smaller peripherals and double-insulated devices.

Certifications for Swiss Market Entry

ESTI approval is the Swiss federal requirement. Many SKUs also carry VDE and DEMKO marks, simplifying procurement for pan-European deployments from a single cord family.

Frequently asked questions

What is an IEC Type J plug and where is it used?
The IEC Type J plug is the standard power plug used in Switzerland, governed by the SEV 1011 standard. It has three round pins arranged in a triangular pattern and is available in two ratings:10 A version: smaller-diameter circular pins, backward-compatible with 16 A outlets16 A version: larger square pins with wider spacing — not compatible with 10 A outlets, preventing overloadType J is used for grounded appliances including computers, monitors, and general household electronics.
What is the difference between a 10 A and 16 A Type J plug?
Both ratings use the SEV 1011 three-pin layout, but the pin dimensions differ deliberately:10 A plug: circular pins, 19 mm long, 4 mm wide, 19 mm span — fits both 10 A and 16 A outlets16 A plug: square pins, 21 mm long, 5 mm wide, 30.5 mm span — fits only 16 A outletsThis mechanical incompatibility is a safety feature that prevents a 16 A cord from being plugged into a 10 A receptacle. Dual-rated outlets with specially shaped openings can accept both plug types.
Which IEC 60320 connectors are available on these Swiss power cords?
The 13 cords in this collection pair the Type J / SEV 1011 plug with the following IEC 60320 connectors:C5 — 2.5 A, for laptop-style power bricksC7 — 2.5 A, ungrounded figure-8 connector for small appliancesC13 — 10 A, standard IT/server connector (straight, left-angle, and right-angle versions available)C15 — 10 A, high-temperature variant of the C13C19 — 16 A, for high-draw blade servers and PDU applications
