About International Plug Type L Power Cords

Identifying the different Italy Power Plug J Types

There are two types of IEC Type J plugs found in Italy. The 10 Amp version of the CEI 23-16 has 3 pins horizontally spaced that are 19mm long and 4mm wide, and span 19mm. The 16 Amp version of the CEI 23-16 looks identical to the 10 Amp version at first glance, however the pins are spaced differently. They are 21mm long and 5mm wide and span 30.5mm. This prevents electrical hazard from connecting the 16 amp plug into the 10 amp outlet. There are dual rated outlets and connectors available that have odd shaped exterior connection holes to allow mating with both variations.

Commonly Found Plug Types in Italy

In Italy, they use several types of power cables for different household appliances. The three primary types of plugs are Type C, F and J. Type C is an ungrounded plug, commonly referred to as the Europlug and is used to power smaller electronics like televisions and electric razors. Type F is used for larger appliances like microwaves, hairdryers, and refrigerators. Type J, which this product line is focused on is for standard electronics that require a grounding conductor. This includes computers, monitors, lights, kitchen appliances and other general use electrical appliances.

The IEC 60320 C13 is a grounded 3 Wire connector rated up to 250V and 15 Amps. The C13 mates with a C14 inlet, and is commonly used in a jumper cable scenario in IT Installations providing power from a PDU to a server, router, switch or other computing device. Most people know the C13 as 'the thing that plugs into my computer' because it is the standard connector used to power most desktop computers. In a desktop computer application, the most common cable is the NEMA 5-15P to C13, which connects your standard North American wall outlet to a desktop computer.

About International Plug Type L Power Cords | Italy CEI 23-16/VII

The IEC Type L Power Cables are most associated to the Italian CEI 23-16 Set of standards, which defines the 10- and 16-Amp configurations of this plug. It rated for 250 VAC and is the standard power plug for energizing common household appliances in Italy. The two plug types cannot be inserted into one another as they are not identically spaced. This is done to prevent electrical hazard by plugging a 16 Amp plug into an outlet rated for only 10 Amps.

Buying Guide: Choosing the Right Type L (Italy CEI 23-16) Cord Set

Match the Amperage First

Italy's CEI 23-16/VII standard defines two physically incompatible plug sizes. Confirm whether the wall outlet or PDU inlet is rated 10 A (S11) or 16 A (S17) before selecting a cord. Plugging a 16 A cord into a 10 A socket is mechanically prevented by the pin spacing, so an incorrect choice simply won't fit.

Choose the Right IEC 60320 Device Connector

  • C13 — the most common choice for IT equipment: servers, KVM switches, monitors, and networking gear.
  • C19 — for high-draw equipment such as blade server chassis and large routers that exceed C13's 15 A rating.
  • C5 — for laptops and compact appliances with a cloverleaf inlet.
  • C7 — ungrounded, for dual-insulated consumer electronics.

Verify the Certification for Your Market

Equipment destined for Italy requires the IMQ mark. For broader European deployment, look for ENEC or VDE. Use the certification filter on this page to narrow results to the exact approval your compliance team needs.

Cable Length and Cordage

Stock lengths run from 6 ft to 25 ft (approximately 2–7.5 m). Cordage gauges range from 0.75 mm² to 1.5 mm², with H05VV-F the most common jacket type. For non-standard lengths or custom builds, use the Power Cord Configurator or request an instant quote.

Frequently asked questions

What countries use the Type L plug besides Italy?
The IEC Type L plug is most closely associated with Italy and is defined by the CEI 23-16/VII standard. It is also found in Chile and, in some installations, in Libya and Ethiopia. Because the 10 A and 16 A pin spacings are incompatible with each other, always confirm the amperage rating of the local outlet before ordering.
What is the difference between the 10 A and 16 A Type L plug?
Both versions have three inline pins, but the dimensions differ to prevent dangerous mis-mating:10 A (CEI 23-50 S11): pins are 4 mm wide, 19 mm long, spaced 19 mm apart.16 A (CEI 23-50 S17): pins are 5 mm wide, 21 mm long, spaced 30.5 mm apart.Dual-rated outlets accept both configurations. World Cord Sets stocks cord sets in both ratings.
What IEC 60320 connectors are available on Type L cord sets?
The Type L collection includes cord sets terminated with the following IEC 60320 connectors:C5 — for laptops and small appliancesC7 — ungrounded, for dual-insulated electronicsC13 — standard IT equipment (servers, switches, monitors)C19 — high-current IT equipment (blade servers, large routers)Angled C13 variants (left-angle and right-angle) are also available for tight cable-management installations.
What certifications do the Type L cord sets carry?
Certifications vary by SKU. Marks available across the collection include:IMQ — Italian national approval, required for use in ItalyVDE — German safety mark, widely accepted across EuropeENEC — pan-European harmonized markKEMA, DEMKO, CEBEC, NEMKO, OVE, SEMKO, SEV — additional European national approvalsRoHS — EU hazardous-substance complianceFilter by certification on this page to find cords approved for your target market.
